Tips for Beginning Your Estate Plan

Have you planned out your financial “bucket list?”

Tips for planning ahead of our new seminar

Jennifer E. Peck from Solomon, Steiner &Peck Ltd. is joining McGregor on Wed., Nov. 13, 2019, 6-7 p.m. to discuss estate planning in a can’t-miss event. While we highly suggest that you stop by and learn more about estate planning, we wanted to give you some tips to consider ahead of the event.

Take inventory – know what you have.

Planning a will is complex, but you can make it easier (and less costly) by simply knowing what you have and who needs to be contacted regarding things like life insurance policies. If you know what you have and you know who your family and attorney need to contact, the process of writing a will becomes much easier.

Determine who gets what.

Nothing divides a family like squabbling over unattributed assets. Decide who gets what ahead of time and also decide if they will receive it all at once or allocated in increments over time.

Pick someone to be your Power of Attorney, just in case.

You hope to have all of your faculties until your final breath, but the reality is many people aren’t able to make their final arrangements later in life. You can choose an attorney or a family member to be your Power of Attorney. Just make sure you’ve picked someone you trust to be in charge!

Ask around about attorneys.

If you don’t have a family attorney you trust, ask friends or family to recommend someone they’ve used. The best advice you can receive is from someone you trust, so lean on your circle to find suitable representation.
