May is Older Americans Month and this year the theme is “Flip the Script.” We’re challenging everyone to change the way we view older adults and how we talk about getting older.
Let’s break the stereotypes and celebrate the strength, wisdom, and contributions of older Americans. It’s time to flip the script and embrace aging as a dynamic, empowering part of life.
This year’s theme, “Flip the Script,” invites us to challenge outdated narratives about aging and instead highlight the vibrancy, resilience, and power of growing older.
For too long, aging has been portrayed in a negative light — as something to be feared or minimized. But that perspective is not only outdated — it’s inaccurate. Older adults are leaders, mentors, innovators, and caretakers. They are volunteers, creatives, business owners, and advocates. They are an essential part of our story — not a footnote.
What does it mean to “Flip the Script”?
- Reframe aging: Celebrate the experience and insight that come with age.
- Uplift older voices: Share stories of older adults making an impact.
- Challenge ageism: Speak out against stereotypes that limit or diminish people as they age.
- Encourage intergenerational connection: Promote dialogue and collaboration across age groups.
- Support lifelong growth: Advocate for opportunities in learning, health, work, and community involvement for all ages.
This month — and every month — let’s honor older Americans not just for what they’ve done, but for who they are and who they continue to become.
Let’s flip the script — because aging isn’t something to endure. It’s something to celebrate!!
