The Junior Volunteer Program at McGregor

Meet Xavier, a junior volunteer at McGregor for the month of July. He is a rising senior at Hawken School in Gates Mills, Ohio. Xavier was inspired to volunteer after participating in “community day” at Hawken. During community day Xaiver was able to help different groups of people around Cleveland by volunteering. After this eye-opening experience and being raised by his mother, who is a social worker, Xaiver applied to be a volunteer at McGregor.

Over the past month, Xaiver has expressed his favorite part of the job is “learning different perspectives and helping people”. Prior to this experience, Xaiver had spent limited time with elder adults. Taking this opportunity has helped him greater understand their mindsets and personalities. His favorite activity with the residents is playing Uno. Xaiver was enthusiastic to talk about the kindness and welcoming community McGregor entails.

When describing what he has learned after volunteering at McGregor, Xaiver explained the importance of “taking care of your mind and being grateful for your time on this Earth”. He claims the stories and lessons he has listened to from residents will stick with him forever.

After high school, Xaiver hopes to attend a university and take a creative path. He is interested in architecture, fashion design, law, and hoping to go somewhere far from home to further widen his perspective of the world.

Thank you for your dedication and support of our residents and programs. We wish you all the best in your endeavors!
