World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

June is World Elder Abuse Awareness Month, with World Elder Abuse Awareness Day observed today, June 15th. This important observance highlights the need to protect the safety, dignity, and wellbeing of older adults in our communities.

Elder abuse—including neglect, emotional harm, and financial exploitation—is more common than many realize. Nationally, an estimated 1 in 10 adults age 60+ experience abuse, yet only about 1 in 5 cases is reported, meaning many older adults suffer in silence.

In Ohio, nearly 300,000 seniors may be impacted each year, and in Cuyahoga County, calls to the elder abuse and neglect hotline have increased by more than 30% over the past five years, with over 3,000 calls received last year alone. This rise reflects both growing awareness and the continued need for vigilance.

While medical professionals, attorneys, and financial workers are mandated reporters, everyone has a role to play. If something feels wrong, speaking up can make a life-changing difference for an older adult.

At McGregor, we are committed to supporting the dignity, safety, and independence of older adults every day—not just today. Visit Cuyahoga County’s Division of Senior and Adult Services to learn more.
