When people hear the up-and-coming term of creative aging, they often think of painting classes, knitting groups, or community theatre. While those activities can be part of it, creative aging is much more than staying busy.
At its core, creative aging recognizes that learning, growth and self-expression all don’t stop with age. Programs centered on creativity help older adults build confidence, strengthen social connections and discover new ways to share their stories. The benefits often extend far beyond the activity itself.
Last year, the McGregor Foundation supported a creative aging initiative through Near West Theatre in partnership with the May Dugan Center. The program culminated in a full-scale performance featuring older adults, many of whom were stepping onto a stage for the first time.
But as Near West Theatre Artistic Director Trinidad Snider explained, the greatest impact wasn’t the final production.
“It’s the relationship building that’s the most important part to me.”
Through the creative process, participants connected with one another, shared personal experiences and found the confidence to express themselves in new ways. Those relationships and experiences often last long after the final curtain call.
Snider also reflected on how the program helped participants advocate for themselves and build confidence in everyday life.
“They won’t be afraid to be like, ‘You know what? This is what I need.’”
That is the power of creative aging.
It reminds us that older adults are not defined by their age, but by their creativity, talents and life experiences. Whether through music, storytelling, theater or visual arts, creative aging programs create opportunities for connection, purpose and growth.
