When most people think of art, their mind goes to a museum or paper and paint. What many don’t realize, is that art is so much more than what is hung on gallery walls. Art is all around us and touches our lives in so many unnoticed ways.
The quilts hung on the walls of McGregor, while they make look simple, could hold generations of family history. Each stitch was carefully done, and each color was carefully picked. The paintings you see hung are all throughout each building! They were thoughtfully placed in that exact spot. Many being donated to McGregor, there is likely rich history behind the home where they were once admired.
The songs you can hear from a resident room or public spaces could remind someone of a loved one, a special achievement, or even just make them smile. A song one person might think is overplayed, could immediately make someone else think of their prom that was 50 years ago. Art is made to tell stories and connect communities.
Art is an outlet when words can’t properly portray feelings or a story. Drawing in a coloring book in order to relax, learning to knit a sweater to give to a grandchild, or painting a picture to place in your room; each special in their own way- art creates memories.
Don’t overlook what might look like a simple piece of art but think of all the history it could have.
