When I began my summer internship at McGregor, I expected to spend my days learning about marketing and communications; creating content, writing stories and gaining experience in this field. What I did not expect was how much I would learn about community, connection and the importance of purpose at every stage of life.
Throughout my time at McGregor, I had the opportunity to share stories from across the organization. From residents and employees to community partners and nonprofit organizations making an impact throughout Northeast Ohio, each story reminded me that a person’s life has been touched by the work being done.
One of the most meaningful parts of my internship was learning more about McGregor’s philanthropic efforts and speaking to organizations who are supported through grantmaking. Seeing firsthand how partnerships help address needs in our community showed me that meaningful change often begins with collaboration. Each organization shared a common goal: making a difference. Whether that was supporting older adults through transportation or helping them file taxes during the stressful season, there are so many people working behind the scenes for this beautiful community.
This led me to learn that storytelling is more than sharing information, but about recognizing people, celebrating their experiences and helping others understand the impact of their work. From creating social media content, banners for the street and developing a virtual grant reporting, I saw how communication can bring people closer to a mission and there is always a need for more.
The people at McGregor made this experience especially memorable. The daily greetings walking through the doors each morning from every single person you pass in the halls speak volumes about the culture of the community. I will miss helping Robert and Frank send pictures to their families, cheering on Mr. Al in bingo each time and checking in with Nancy on my walks around the building. Thank you to Lee Ann O’Brien, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer, for trusting my ideas and giving me the opportunity to grow as a professional. I am especially thankful to Tara Regan, Director of Philanthropy, for allowing me to be a part of McGregor’s grantmaking efforts and sharing valuable lessons in and out of the workforce. I am once again incredibly grateful to Chris Somosi, Communications Specialist, whose kindness and genuine conversations made such an impact on me, anyone who has the opportunity to know her is truly lucky. Finally, my lovely two fellow interns Annie and Lydia, who I will share lasting memories with and hope to see them in a professional setting once again in the future.
This summer was more than an internship; it was an experience that shaped how I see storytelling, community and the power of meaningful work.
