As McGregor prepares to celebrate 150 years of service, we’re reflecting on the people whose vision shaped our organization. While names like Amasa Stone and Ambrose McGregor are well known, McGregor’s story would not be complete without recognizing three remarkable women: Julia Stone, Sophia McCrosky, and Tootie McGregor Terry.

In 1877, Julia Stone joined her husband, Amasa, in establishing the Home for Aged Women, one of Cleveland’s first private organizations dedicated to caring for older women. At a time when few resources existed for older adults without family support, the Home offered safety, dignity, and compassionate care.
Years later, Sophia McCrosky envisioned creating a similar home that would serve older adults with kindness and respect. According to The McGregor Story, the dream of The A.M. McGregor Home belonged to Sophia, whose lifelong commitment to helping others inspired its creation.
That dream became a reality through the generosity of her sister, Tootie McGregor Terry. Following the death of her husband, Ambrose McGregor, Tootie donated the land and financial support needed to establish The A.M. McGregor Home, creating a lasting legacy of compassionate care that continues today.
Although nearly 150 years have passed since these women first imagined a better future for older adults, their values remain at the heart of McGregor. Compassion, dignity, and community continue to guide the work we do every day.
As we look ahead to our 150th anniversary, we’re proud to honor Julia, Sophia, and Tootie—not only for what they built, but for the legacy of care they left for generations to come.
