The Man Behind the McGregor Name

As McGregor prepares to celebrate 150 years of service, we’re looking back at the people whose vision helped shape our organization.

Before his name became synonymous with compassionate care, Ambrose McGregor built up a successful career in the oil industry. Beginning his career making barrels with his father, he later joined Standard Oil, where he became one of John D. Rockefeller’s trusted associates.

Although Ambrose passed away before The A.M. McGregor Home was established, his legacy lived through his wife, Tootie McGregor Terry. Inspired by her sister Sophia McCrosky’s vision of creating a home for older adults, Tootie used the resources Ambrose left behind to help establish The A.M. McGregor Home in 1904.

More than a century later, McGregor continues to honor that legacy by providing compassionate care and support to older adults throughout Northeast Ohio.

As we count down to our 150th anniversary, we’re reminded that a legacy isn’t defined by a name; it’s defined by the lives it continues to impact.
