Tips to Help Seniors Sleep
A Good Night’s Rest Can Lead to Some Amazing Health Benefits
No matter your age, getting a good night’s rest is vital to your health. Some people need eight hours to move, some need a little less. The thing that remains constant among people is that everyone knows what they need to function, and once you find that magic number, it’s important to stick to it and make sure you hit it nightly.
But that’s easier said than done sometimes.
May was Better Sleep Month. That’s right, getting rest is so important that there is an entire month dedicated to it! Here are some tips we want you to consider that can help seniors get a good night’s rest:
Stay Active
You don’t have to run a marathon, but if you can find some time to get some exercise during the day, you will sleep better at night. The body will naturally want to shut down for the night, and that will help you get quality sleep on a schedule that is better suited for your lifestyle.
Stick to a Routine
If you can maintain a steady bedtime and stick to it every night, that is a good step towards getting your sleep schedule regulated. Maybe you always brush your teeth and put your PJs on at a certain time and then read a book for half an hour before going to bed. Whatever the routine is that works, stick to it and you’ll see results.
Eliminate Distractions
Turn off the television. Turn your phone off. Don’t sit in bed with a tablet at night. When you go to bed, shut the lights off, turn off the electronics, and focus strictly on sleep. Your bed should be reserved for solace.
Reduce Stress
Again, easier said than done, right? Remember, we’re talking about reducing stress for bed, so you can do some deep breathing and meditation exercises prior to sleep that can slow down the heart rate and help you focus on rest instead of stress.
See the Doctor
If you’ve made a true effort to get your sleep schedule back on track and it’s still not working, it might be time to pay a visit to the doctor. They might have some dietary restrictions and exercise processes they’d like you to try, and if that doesn’t work, it’s possible that they will prescribe a medicine that can help you find your sleep.
