2020 Vision: Eye Care Tips for Seniors

2020 is the “Year of Vision.”

What can you do to improve eye health if you are over 60?

Given that we’ve always heard that 20/20 is perfect vision,  thoughts of “2020” being our new year naturally brought forward a slew of “vision” references used in marketing. At McGregor, we feel that eye health should be a priority for seniors. Here are some tips to increase eye health in seniors in 2020.

Keep your living space safe.

About half of all eye injuries that occur annually take place in or around the living space (CBS News). That means that you should make your living area as safe as possible to avoid falls. Make sure that all rugs are securely in place and are slip proof, as well as any mats in the shower or tub area. You can also make sure that any sharp edges on desks or tables are covered with a soft protective cushion.

Exercise.

Over the last 10 years, several studies have found connections between regular exercise and reduced risks for several common eye ailments such as cataracts, wet age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma (Cleveland Clinic). It seems like every aspect of physical and mental well-being can be assisted by exercise, and your eyes are no different.

Get your rest.

Lack of sleep can cause immediate issues, like dry eyes and eye spasms, but it can also lead to more serious issues. According to Midwest Eye Consultants, serious issues like glaucoma can be traced back to a lack of sleep. Don’t take the chance – get your rest!

Get regular exams.

According to Bausch + Lomb, it’s recommended that you should be getting eye exams every year if you are over 60 years of age. As we get older, eye health becomes a larger factor, especially if conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes exist. It’s important to remain vigilant regarding eye health.

Eye health is important at McGregor and that’s why, as a part of our assisted living program, we offer regular eye maintenance visits and access to eye care professionals to ensure that your vision is protected. It’s just one of the many reasons why McGregor received an “Excellent” rating in its most recent state survey. To find out more about the many benefits of McGregor, contact us today!
