It is important for everyone to take care of their heart, especially those 65 and older who are at a higher risk of heart related problems. These heart problems may include a heart attack, stroke, heart disease, or heart failure.
Steps you can take to keep your heart healthy
- Consistent exercise, even simply taking a walk each day.
- Quit smoking and reduce alcohol intake.
- Keeping diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol under control.
- Manage stress and maintain a healthy weight.
- Implement a heart healthy diet.
A heart healthy diet includes, ‘eating from the rainbow’ or eating a mix of colorful, nutrient rich, fruits and vegetables. Also, eating whole grains, fat free or low-fat milk and cheese, protein including seafood, lean meats, chicken, beans, nuts, and seeds is very important! Limiting added sugar from drinks or sweets along with food that has butter and shortening will help you maintain a healthy heart.
Love your heart, so it can love you back!
