“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is time for home.”
~Edith Sitwell
Winter is approaching and so is its cold and snowy weather! Winter is a time where everyone spends more time inside doing indoor activities that they love. It is important for seniors to find activities that interest them to make sure they enjoy themselves this winter season.
Being indoors gives you time to relax. Doing a puzzle, making a craft, taking a bath, or doing yoga are great ways to relax in your home. Stretching and walking around is important to continue doing inside to make sure that you are keeping your body moving! Trying new movies, shows, or podcasts is always an exciting past time. Stimulating the brain with puzzles, board games, books, and even online games will help you be entertained during your time at home.
While there are many fun or calming activities you can do indoors during the winter, you are missing out on social interaction. An amazing way to not feel isolated during this time is video chat! Facetime, Zoom, or other video chat platforms help you to stay connected with your family and friends while everyone is indoors. Especially when roads may be unsafe for travel and there cannot be visits, video chat is a great resource for everyone.
Another part of winter that is crucial to think about is safety. Seniors who are in their own homes need to be equipped with a safety kit. Some essentials are warm blankets, flashlights, batteries, a radio, bottled water, non-perishable food, and a week supply of prescription medications. It is also smart that all seniors have a working cellphone that is available if an emergency arises.
Senior Living Communities offer safe living spaces that allow for social interaction, even in the winter. These communities often have a wide variety of activities that seniors can do. They also foster a great way to stay engaged during the winter, or any season! There are events, common rooms for gathering, and other spaces that allow seniors to interact with one another and keep each other company.
McGregor prioritizes our residents’ safety and encourages social engagement for everyone this winter season.
