Multigenerational teams boast success

This is the first time in the history of the U.S. workforce that so many different generations are working together. The generations that will dominate the workforce in 2025 are Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials, Generation Z.

Following this group is Generation Alpha (born between 2010-2024) and Generation Bet, which will follow them.

Generational definitions are most useful when they span a set age range and therefore, allow meaningful comparisons across generations. That is why the generations today each span 15 years with Generation Y (Millennials) born from 1980 to 1994; Generation Z from 1995 to 2009 and Generation Alpha from 2010 to 2024. c

Experts say, Gen Z’s are agile learners and value learning and upskilling. Millennials, on the other hand, might be fixated on their knowledge and experiences and unwilling to unlearn and relearn as quickly as Gen Z’s.

Most business owners struggle to find qualified candidates to fill their staffing needs. A strong workforce comprised of multigenerational employees can help minimize that challenge with a broad pool of talent. Adapt your job roles to accommodate different generational preferences and skills. It’s suggested to use these expanded workforces for your advantage, which is why the Summer Internship program at McGregor is so vital to our team–we all have something to learn throughout our leadership spectrum.

Our culture and values are integral to our McGregor employees which is why we continue to use our annual Culture Survey to identify our growth. We want to understand how our employees feel about McGregor. It is important for us to see where we have made progress on our culture and where there is work still to do. We also survey insights into understanding their personal values, the values/behaviors you currently see every day in our organization and the values/behaviors you’d like to see in our organization. Values are our guide to how we act and make decisions.

From these insights we continue to innovate training among the staff that highlight strategy and reinforces key skills. We accomplish this through the McGregor Leadership Academy, ELEVATE, Earn & Learn STNA program.

Respect is key. Every generation is affected by the economic and cultural events of their youth. It shapes the diverse set of values and preferences that employees bring to the workplace. Employers need to understand and adapt to those preferences.
