Martin Luther King Jr. Day honors the achievements of Martin Luther King Jr., a leader of the American civil rights movement who advocated for the use of nonviolent means to end segregation. Held on the third Monday in January, we honor MLK Jr.’s legacy of strength, perseverance, and his lifelong commitment to justice.
King quickly became America’s most influential advocate for civil rights. He led the 1963 March on Washington and was instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In 1964 King was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day serves as a reminder of progress made in, and the current pursuit of equality for all.
