A Century of Black History Commemorations

McGregor is proud to continue its annual observation of Black History Month (also known in the United States as African American History Month). We are delighted to honor the heritage, resilience, and contributions of Black people during Black History Month, taking place throughout the month of February. This month is designated to inspire us to pause and reflect on how communities of color are constantly striving to build an inclusive community based on mutual understanding and respect. 

The Theme for 2026 Black History Month is “A Century of Black History Commemorations.” This theme marks the 100th anniversary of the first commemoration of Black history, which began in 1926 with Negro History Week, the precursor to Black History Month. It invites reflection on how a century of remembering and celebrating Black history has shaped our understanding of the past and influenced culture, education, and society today

Please look for the following events across McGregor (PACE & Residential) that commemorative Black History:

  • Throughout a number of McGregor campuses are posters and displays commemorating Black History achievements and the impact on the world.
  • Join us for a fun celebration of Black History through Interactive Black History Month Jeopardy on Wednesday, February 11th from 11:30 am-1:30 pm in the McGregor Gardens Community Room (light refreshments will be available).
  • At McGregor Gardens- join us for a viewing of the amazing Academy Award Winning Documentary “When We Were Kings” on Thursday, March 26th in the McGregor Gardens Community Room.  This Oscar-winning documentary chronicles the story of the “Rumble in the Jungle” between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali.

  • Our Stories, Our Steps , Our Art on Friday, February 27th from 2:30 pm-4:30 pm in the McGregor Gardens Community Room. This event features live music, arts and crafts, Praise Dancers, storytelling, and much more.
