Annual Spring Tradition of Planting Partners Returns to McGregor

The Planting Partners program at McGregor Senior Living is an annual therapeutic gardening event that brings together volunteers, residents and families to design and plant personal gardening containers. Pots are labeled with the residents’ names, providing an ongoing cultivation activity throughout the summer and a beautiful conversation piece to show off to visitors.

This year’s program was held on May 22.

The program gives seniors, many of whom miss tending to a home garden, the opportunity to engage in hands-on gardening, enjoy fresh air and socialize with community members. McGregor provides all necessary supplies (pots, soil, plants, tools) and welcomes volunteers from local organizations. Recent partners and sponsors have included teams from KeyBank, CareSource, Zeta Omega Chapter Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and New Community.

Although gardening is not typically viewed as “exercise,” it is a great way for McGregor seniors to increase strength, flexibility and balance. Bending over planting seeds, digging up a patch of soil, or carrying a watering can provide a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment as well as keep the body moving and stretching.
