The Cleveland Survival Guide: Pothole Season

In Cleveland, spring doesn’t officially begin when the flowers bloom. It begins the moment everyone starts swerving.

Pothole season is practically a Northeast Ohio tradition. One minute you’re enjoying your drive, and the next you’re gripping the steering wheel after hearing the dreaded THUD of a pothole you thought you missed.

Over time, Cleveland drivers develop special survival skills:

  • Expertly swerving around suspicious craters
  • Immediately turning down the radio to “check how the car sounds”
  • Avoiding roads based on memory and fear
  • Accepting orange construction barrels as part of the scenery

And somehow, every friend still claims they “know a shortcut” that absolutely does not involve suspension damage.

But despite the potholes, construction and leftover dusty windstorms that end up everywhere, Clevelanders still persevere! Maybe it’s because surviving the pothole season together feels like a community event of its own.

At least we can agree on one thing: finding a freshly paved road in Cleveland feels better than winning the lottery.
