On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress approved the design of a national flag.
Since 1916, when President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation establishing a national Flag Day on June 14, Americans have commemorated the adoption of the Stars and Stripes in many ways–displaying the flag in the front of their homes, parades, and other patriotic observances. Prior to 1916, many localities and a few states had been celebrating the day for years. Congressional legislation designating that date as the national Flag Day was signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1949; the legislation also called upon the president to issue a Flag Day proclamation every year.

Although the date marks this 1777 adoption, it wasn’t officially established as an annual national observance until 1949, when President Harry Truman signed the Act of Congress designating June 14th as National Flag Da
Ohio Connections: While the holiday is celebrated nationwide, Ohio has deep ties to the flag. The current 50-star American flag was designed by Lancaster, Ohio, native Robert G. Heft in 1958. Furthermore, Findlay, Ohio, is officially recognized as “Flag City, USA”. Flag Day is celebrated on June 14th because it commemorates the anniversary of the First Flag Resolution passed by the Second Continental Congress on June 14, 1777.
Ohio Penal Industries (OPI) operates a specialized American flag-making program at the Ohio Reformatory for Women. Established in 1926, this unit teaches incarcerated women valuable trade skills by manufacturing official United States flags in preparation for holidays like Flag Day (June 14) and Independence Day
Flag Evolution and Recognition
- 1777-1960: Following the 1777 adoption of the 13-stripe/13-star design, Congress mandated in 1818 that the flag would retain 13 stripes, with new stars added for each state. The current 50-star flag was adopted in 1960.
- 1885-1949: Driven by efforts from teacher Bernard J. Cigrand, Flag Day gained traction, leading to President Wilson’s proclamation in 1916 and President Truman’s official designation of National Flag Day in 1949.
- Current Status: While not a federal public holiday, June 14 is observed nationally, with Pennsylvania being the only state to recognize it as a paid state holiday.
