Heinen’s Grocery Store Closure
After more than a decade serving downtown Cleveland, Heinen’s Grocery Store has announced it will be permanently closing its downtown location on July 31, 2026. The closure marks the end of an 11- year chapter for one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.
When the store opened in 2015, it represented more than just a place to buy groceries. It brought new energy to the city and became a symbol of Cleveland’s revitalization. Housed in the historic Cleveland Trust Rotunda, the store’s intricate architecture, marble columns, and stunning stained-glass dome quickly captivated residents and visitors. This store also served as the only full-service grocery store in the area, making everyday life easier for residents and downtown workers.
The announcement disappointed many residents, including Cleveland Mayor Justin Bubb, who reaffirmed the city’s commitment to explaining access to grocery stores throughout the city. Heinen’s also confirmed that every associate affected by this closure will be offered a position at another store, ensuring employees are not without a job.
Although the decision ultimately came down to financial challenges, Heinen’s downtown location leaves behind a lasting legacy as a symbol of Cleveland’s revitalization. More than a place to shop, it reflected the city’s progress and renewed sense of community.
