Growing a Healthier Lifestyle Through Gardening

When most people hear the word “exercise” they often picture going to the gym, lifting weights, or running on a treadmill. But these are not the only ways to stay fit. In fact, many everyday activities can contribute to a healthy lifestyle. With summer right around the corner, gardening offers a unique opportunity for people to sow seeds and strength.

National Gardening Exercise Day highlights the little-known physical and mental benefits of gardening. Tasks like digging, lifting bags of soil, and squatting to plant seeds all engage muscle groups throughout the body. These activities also improve balance, a crucial aspect of fitness for people of all ages. Beyond muscular development, gardening improves cardiovascular and respiratory health as well as increasing flexibility.

Here at McGregor, we understand the role outdoor activity plays in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. This is why our residents have access to a greenhouse, an expansive courtyard, and gardening events. For example, in partnership with Planting Partners, McGregor hosts an annual event where residents can get their hands dirty by planting a flowerpot they can continue to care for throughout the season.
