Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an international health campaign aimed at raising awareness about the risks of breast cancer, and how it can be prevented. It is a chance to show support for the 2.3 women affected worldwide and to support resources for early detection and treatment.

Breast cancer occurs when breast cells develop mutations which cause them to divide and multiply. As the most common type of cancer in women (besides skin cancers), breast cancer accounts for 30% of female cancer cases annually. Although typically found in women, close to 3,000 men in the U.S. are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer.

However, healthcare advancements provide hope for decreasing the burden of breast cancer worldwide. Improved detection methods such as mammograms, ultrasounds, and self-exams have been instrumental in detecting breast cancer earlier, increasing chances of survival. According to the American Cancer Society, when detected early, the 5-year survival rate is 99%. It is for this reason that it is important to use the month of October to listen, learn, and act. Here are some common symptoms of breast cancer to look for along with prevention strategies.
Signs and Symptoms of Breast Cancer:
- A lump or swelling in the breast or underarm area
- Breast pain and/or irritation
- Discolored and pitted skin on the breast
- Fluid discharge from the nipple other than breast milk
Prevention Strategies:
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle through a nutrient-dense diet and regular exercise
- Conduct breast self-examinations once a month
- Schedule regular mammograms to reduce the chance breast cancer goes undetected
- If you are at increased risk, your doctor may recommend treatments such as medication or a preemptive mastectomy

While breast cancer survival rates have improved with the advancement of early detection methods and treatments, it is still important to practice good health behaviors as catching breast cancer early significantly improves one’s outcome.
