25% of older adults will experience a fall per year, and as the winter seasons arrive in full force, it is important to know what to do to prevent falls and loss of balance. Here are 10 tips for you or your loved ones that can prevent detrimental falls during the wintertime.

10 Tips for Avoiding Falls in the Winter
1. Make sure all outside walkways are cleared of snow and ice by using an ice melt product and sand.
2. You can even carry a small bag of rock salt, sand, and cat litter to spread on the ground when needing traction.
3. When possible, avoid shoveling snow by yourself, since there is a risk of falling and even a heart attack for older adults when shoveling.
4. If possible, do not walk in more than one inch of snow; deeper amounts can cause you to lose your balance.
5. Install sturdy railings that lead into your home that could support you if you ever slip. Hold onto those railings when you spot icy spots on steps or walkways.
6. Wear boots and shoes that fit properly and have soles with good traction.
7. Also, if possible, purchase non-skid, low-heeled, and rubber-soled footwear.
8. If the weather prohibits you from leaving your home, consider using delivery services to access prescriptions, food, and other necessities.
9. Ask your healthcare provider for indoor exercises that can help you maintain your balance, strength, and stamina when you cannot venture out of your home.
10. Lastly, do not be afraid to slow yourself down when needed and to ask for help from others.
