Wear Red Day: Raising Awareness for Heart Health

February 6th is National Wear Red Day

Heart disease is a serious health issue, responsible for 1 out of 4 deaths. The good news is that heart disease is often preventable when we understand the risks and take proactive steps to protect our health.  Wear Red is a powerful reminder to raise awareness, start conversations, and make heart health a priority.

Understanding the Risk Factors

Knowing the risks factors for heath disease is the first step toward prevention. Some of the most common risk factors include:

  1. Smoking
  2. Obesity
  3. High blood pressure
  4. Diabetes
  5. High cholesterol
  6. Physical inactivity
  7. Family history

While some risk factors, such as family history, are beyond our control, many can be managed or reduced through lifestyle changes.

Taking Steps Towards Prevention

Prevention plays a critical role in maintaining a healthy heart. Small, consistent actions can make a big difference over time. Here are some important steps you can take:

  1. Seeing your healthcare provider regularly and get routine bloodwork to monitor your health
  2. Staying active throughout the day, even with simple movement like walking or stretching
  3. Eating a balanced, heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains
  4. Avoid smoking, as it significantly increases the risk of heart disease

A Simple Step with a Big Message

Wearing red is more than a color choice; it’s a statement of support, awareness, and commitment to heart health. Your Heart works hard for you every day, show it some love.
