When it comes to supporting employees and keeping operations running smoothly, Toni McCann and Delena Rozell-Macon make a powerful team in the Human Resources Department at McGregor. The two often joke that they are the “Batman and Robin” of HR, always ready to help solve problems, guide employees and tackle strategic workplace issues together.
For McCann, working in the Human Resources field for 43 years and at McGregor in HR for the past 24 years, has been a rewarding journey.
“I stayed because I love human resources,” said McCann. “People come to you with all sorts of issues – business concerns, personal questions and there’s never a typical day in HR. There’s always something going on, and I really flourished in this environment.”
During her time at McGregor, McCann has watched the organization grow and evolve in remarkable ways.
“When I started, we only had five computers in the whole building,” she laughed. “What kept me here was the close-knit, family environment. Most importantly, I enjoyed getting up and coming to work every day, and when the time comes, I hope to retire from here after all these years of service.”
Rozell-Macon has been at McGregor for 17 years. She began her McGregor career as a staffing coordinator in the nursing department, later transferring to the Human Resources Department in 2020. The move gave her the opportunity to work closely with McCann, who immediately recognized the expertise Rozell-Macon would bring to the role.
“We hired Delena because she was experienced with managing people and very personable,” McCann said. “She already knew many employees since the nursing department is the largest department at McGregor. Her staffing experience was extensive, and we just clicked. She was the right personality for the job.”
Today, Rozell-Macon plays an essential role in McGregor’s HR operations. Her responsibilities include posting jobs, onboarding new hires, interviewing candidates and assisting employees with workplace concerns and questions.
“I came to the Human Resources department to work with strong people who would support my professional growth,” said Rozell-Macon. “There was never a dumb question, and I was always encouraged. And it’s very rewarding when employees come to you for help. Most importantly, I truly feel appreciated by the people I work with and by the employees I’m able to assist. It’s a great feeling that continues today.”
As McGregor celebrates Healthcare Human Resources Professionals Week, both McCann and Rozell-Macon reflected on what it takes to succeed in HR.
“You have to be patient,” they agreed. “Different people learn in different ways, and sometimes you have to present information in ways that are easy for employees to understand.
There’s always something new to learn,” Rozell-Macon said. “Rules and regulations change constantly, especially in healthcare. It keeps your mind active. And perhaps most importantly, the role requires flexibility.”
“You have to be able to multitask and switch gears quickly,” said McCann. “Every day brings something different.”
McCann adds that strong organization and attention to detail are also essential skills. “You definitely have to be patient, detail-oriented and organized,” she said. “If you’re not a people person, HR probably isn’t the right field for you. Having the ability to work with all types of personalities is paramount.”
Despite the challenges, both women say HR is a career they highly recommend.
For McCann and Delena, that variety, along with the opportunity to help others, is exactly what makes working in human resources so rewarding.
