Benefits of “House Burping” During Winter

Letting some natural light into your home is one of the best things you can do for your well-being, but so is letting in some fresh air.
‘House burping’—the practice of ventilating your home by briefly opening windows or doors—remains beneficial even through colder winter months. Indoor air can become stale and accumulate pollutants from cooking, cleaning products, and everyday activities. Proper ventilation helps reduce these contaminants, improving overall air quality and supporting better respiratory health.
“House burping”—the practice of opening your windows for 10–15 minutes a day to let fresh air in your home is the latest home hack.
It originated in the German tradition of “lüften,” meaning “to air out” or “ventilate.” In Germany, airing out your home is more than a tradition—it’s something many households are actually required to do.
“Indoor air quality gets really bad during the winter, since windows and doors tend to stay closed,” says Dan DiClerico, the director of the Home Improvement & Outdoor Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute. “Even a small amount of fresh air exchange from the outside will help disperse allergens, chemicals and other airborne contaminants. Cracking a window is the best way to achieve this.”
During winter, homes are often sealed tightly to conserve heat, which can trap moisture and lead to mold growth. Burping your house allows excess humidity to escape, reducing the risk of mold and mildew, which thrive in damp environments. This simple step also helps eliminate lingering odors and balances indoor humidity, making your home feel fresher and more comfortable. Quick bursts of fresh air—just a few minutes at a time—won’t significantly lower the indoor temperature but can make a big difference in maintaining a healthy living space all season long.
We know that when your home is warm and cozy during a winter day, it might be hard to justify letting some cold air inside. If Germans can brave their icy winters for a bit of fresh air, surely 10–15 minutes won’t ruin your cozy vibe.
So let the sun shine in!
