Heinen’s downtown Cleveland, the only full-service grocery store in the central business district, closes for good on July 31. For most people, that’s a retail story.
But it got us thinking about something bigger: what does it actually mean for older adults living downtown to lose their nearest grocery store?

For some, it might be a minor inconvenience. For others, it could mean a longer trip, more planning or leaning on someone else just to get groceries. It is also a reminder of something we think a lot about at McGregor: independence for older adults isn’t shaped only by the care and support systems around them, but by the everyday things in their neighborhood too. A grocery store. A bus stop. A sidewalk. These pieces matter, and they’re often easy to overlook until one of them disappears.
There’s no simple answer here, and no ‘right’ solution. But it seems like a conversation worth having.
