At 103 years old, Gurnese Smedley is McGregor’s oldest resident and a remarkable example of how to live a life rooted in faith and love. Born on August 16, 1928, and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, Gurnese spent her time doing domestic work, such as cleaning homes, and raising her late daughter. In her mid to late twenties, she made the move to Cleveland, where she resided near Superior and Hough.

She was a former Sunday School secretary at her church and continues to spend time reading her Bible. When asked what advice she could offer to younger generations, she came up with the answer “Stay in the Bible!”. She shared that her favorite book is Jeremiah and loves the stories of David. Today, she carries the role of being both a grandma and a great-grandmother. Gurnese embodies a life defined by devotion and quiet wisdom, proving that love and strength are in all seasons of life.
Residents like Gurnese are a testament to the extraordinary lives and stories that make up the McGregor community. Longevity reflects decades of resilience and meaningful relationships. It is not uncommon to meet a resident at McGregor in their 90s and beyond. This longevity speaks not only to their enduring spirit, but also to the supportive community within McGregor.
