Evolution of Taste and Smell

Have you ever noticed that your once favorite meal doesn’t hit the spot the way it used to?

Or do you remember the first time you tried coffee as a kid?

Chances are, it was disgustingly bitter and unpleasant. Yet over time, that same drink became a morning necessity. Aging doesn’t just change the number of candles on your cake; it can also change your senses, especially smell and taste.

As we grow older, our taste buds become less sensitive. The hot sauce once burning on your tongue, now might not seem as severe. Our sense of smell also continues to decrease as we get older. Taste and smell work hand in hand, so as smell lessens, foods and drinks may taste more bland.

Diminished smell may be the result of infections, cancer treatments, medications, and growths. Likewise, change in taste can be linked to cancer treatments, medications, and dental issues. While many of these are unavoidable, doing simple things like taking care of dental health can be extremely helpful.

Adding additional salt or sugar to meals may be tempting, but this comes with risks. Proper nutrition is important in all stages of life, but especially within older years.  Excess amounts of sugar could increase changes in diabetes, cavities, and obesity, while too much salt can contribute to high blood pressure and other health concerns.

Rather than reaching for the saltshaker, natural remedies may be the answer. Try experimenting with herbs such as thyme, basil, or rosemary. Incorporating bright colored vegetables like carrots can also add flavor and texture. While this can be discouraging, use it as an opportunity to try to expand your palate, explore new foods, and create new favorite recipes.
