Preventing Loneliness: Staying Connected During the Holidays

Loneliness can affect anyone, but older adults may be especially vulnerable to feeling isolated after the loss of a spouse or friend, retirement, changes in mobility, or moving away from family, especially during the holidays. Preventing loneliness is about more than simply being around other people, it is about having meaningful connections, a sense of purpose and opportunities to participate in life.

Small steps can make a big difference. A phone call to a friend, sharing a meal with others, joining a fitness or arts program, volunteering, attending a community event or simply spending time with neighbors can help create meaningful relationships. Staying connected with family through regular visits, video calls or shared activities can also help older adults feel valued and included.

Why it matters to McGregor:
At McGregor, we believe aging should be a time of continued purpose, connection and possibility. Our communities provide opportunities for residents to build friendships, participate in activities, pursue interests and remain engaged with the people and community around them. Through McGregor senior living services and McGregor PACE, we strive to support older adults not only in their health and well-being, but also in their social and emotional lives.

Preventing loneliness starts with connection. Sometimes, a simple invitation, conversation or shared experience can remind someone that they are not alone.
