September 23: Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah, meaning “Head of the Year,” designates the beginning of the Jewish New Year. Celebrated on the first two days of the new year, Rosh Hashanah marks the start of the Ten Days of Repentance which then concludes at the end of Yom Kippur. This period acts as a time to reflect on one’s achievements and failures and prepare to start anew.

One of the most important of the Jewish Holy Days, festivities begin with the sounding of the ram’s horn or “shofar” at the beginning of each day. Other celebrations include prayer ceremonies and large feasts, while candle lighting ushers each night of the holiday.

Happy Rosh Hashanah!
