Poison ivy is a skin reaction caused by contact with urushiol oil found in the poison ivy plant. You may have it if a red, itchy rash appears 12 to 48 hours after outdoor exposure, especially in wooded or grassy areas. The rash often shows up in streaks, patches or lines where the plant touched your skin.

Blisters, swelling, and intense itching are common signs. It is not contagious, but oil on clothing or skin can spread it further. Washing with soap and water can help reduce symptoms. Severe cases may require medical treatment to relieve discomfort and prevent infection.
