How to Make More Informed Healthy Eating Choices

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics created National Nutrition Month® to help more individuals make better choices about healthy eating and physical activity. This year’s theme is focused on nourishing ourselves during every phase of our life—an important reminder for older adults. Sometimes it can be hard to pause and take a close look at our eating and physical activity habits, but we need to do so.

This year, the National Nutrition Month® Weekly Messages can guide us on this journey. Take a look and see what small changes you can make to improve your health and well-being!

Week 1: Eat with the environment in mind.

  • Try to eat more plant-based meals and snacks.
  • Look for foods that have minimal packaging.
  • Buy foods that are locally in season.
  • Shop from local stores.
  • Start a garden to grow more food at home.

Week 2: Visit a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

  • Find an RDN who specializes in your unique needs.
  • Learn how nutrient needs may change with age.
  • Get personalized nutrition information to meet your health goals.

Week 3: Stay nourished and save money.

  • Plan your meals and snacks ahead of time.
  • Inventory what you have at home in your pantry and freezer before purchasing more.
  • Use a grocery list and shop sales to save money at the grocery store.
  • Learn about and utilize community resources like SNAP, WIC, and local food banks.

Week 4: Eat a variety of foods from all food groups.

  • Share a favorite cultural food and tradition with a friend or family member.
  • Eat foods in many different forms—fresh, frozen, canned, and dried.
  • Avoid fad diets with unnecessary restrictions—always consult your doctor.
  • Be grateful for your body by giving it the food—and fuel—it needs.

Week 5: Make tasty foods at home.

  • Learn cooking and meal preparation skills—it’s never too late to start.
  • Try new flavors and foods.
  • Find ways to use leftovers instead of disposing of them.
  • Create happy memories by eating with friends and family when possible.
