Reflections Inspired by Dr. Howard Tucker and the Movie “What’s Next?”

Last night we were treated to a screening of the film, “What’s Next?”, a documentary about Dr. Howard Tucker, who is the world’s oldest practicing physician.

Dr. Tucker is truly an inspiration, and at 103 years old has no plans of retiring.

The question of when to retire is one that many people grapple with as they approach the later stages of their careers. The movie “What’s Next,” featuring Dr. Howard Tucker—a neurologist who, at 103 years old, continues to work with no plans to retire—challenges conventional ideas about aging and retirement.

Dr. Tucker’s story invites us to reconsider not only the timing of retirement but also its meaning and purpose. What drives someone to continue working well past the traditional age of retirement, and what factors should we consider when making this deeply personal decision?

As life expectancy increases and people remain healthier for longer, the concept of retirement is evolving. Many individuals find fulfillment and purpose in their work, and the idea of stepping away can feel abrupt or unnecessary. Some choose to retire fully, while others opt for part-time work, consulting, or volunteering. The flexibility to shape this stage of life according to personal needs and desires is increasingly available and encouraged.

Today, People talk about an Encore or Second Act…a time to still fulfill purpose and sustain quality of life.

Stories like Dr. Tucker’s demonstrate that age does not have to be a barrier to professional engagement. Continuing to work can offer cognitive stimulation, a sense of community, and ongoing opportunities for personal growth.

The story of Dr. Howard Tucker reminds us that there is no single answer to the question, “When is it time to retire?”

Instead, it’s a decision that should be made thoughtfully, considering health, finances, satisfaction, and purpose. Whether continuing to work or embracing retirement, what matters most is pursuing a life that feels meaningful and fulfilling—at any age!
