Within the month of June, we recognize the importance of men’s mental health. Ending the harsh stigma around mental health is only the start. Creating a supporting environment that lets men feel comfortable about speaking out is just as important. Admitting to your struggles doesn’t make you weak, but makes you admirable and brave. Rather than suffering in silence, get the help you deserve!
For many men, admitting to feelings of sadness, anxiety, and emotional pain can feel hard. Our society has pushed the perspective that men should be tough and self-resilient. These expectations can make men feel less masculine and weak. It can often feel life accepting defeat. The reality is, getting help for these struggles is one of the bravest things you can do. Did you know roughly one in four people experience mental illness, yet it is still a taboo topic. Why is it any different than going to the doctor for a broken bone? Disorders such as anxiety and depression have been scientifically proven to be imbalances in the brain, not just experiencing the “blues” or being too sensitive.
During Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month, don’t forget to prioritize you and your well-being. Reach out if you need help. Check in on family, friends, coworkers. Be a shoulder for someone to lean on. There is no shame in asking for help, rather be proud of yourself for taking the steps to achieve greatness!
