Creative Aging Meets Broadway: Expanding Possibility Through MTI’s Senior Collection

When older adults step into a rehearsal space, the impact often goes far beyond the stage.

Recently, McGregor’s grantmaking supported creative aging programming with Near West Theatre in partnership with the May Dugan Center, participants expressed strong excitement about the possibility of performing a full musical production designed specifically for older adults.

One title that sparked enthusiasm was Guys and Dolls SR., part of Music Theatre International’s Broadway Senior™ collection.

Officially launched in May 2025, the Broadway Senior ™ series adapts beloved musicals into accessible 60-minute versions designed for performers 55 and over. These productions lower barriers to participation through adjusted arrangements, flexible staging and a focus on inclusion—making it possible for older adults to experience the joy of performing on stage.

Beyond accessibility, the collection reflects a broader shift in how the arts are engaging older adults: not as passive audiences, but as active creators.

As Near West Theatre Artistic Director Trinidad Snider noted, the most meaningful outcomes often emerge during the process itself.

The relationships built in rehearsal spaces; the confidence gained through collaboration and the opportunity to try something new all contribute to the deeper impact of creative aging programs.

For many participants, the experience is less about performance and more about connection, expression and rediscovery.

Creative aging initiatives like this demonstrate that it is never too late to learn, create or step into a new role whether that is on stage or in real life.

At McGregor, we are proud to support programs that open doors to these kinds of experiences, where creativity and community come together to enrich the aging journey.
