Stronger Together: The Importance of Social Wellness

Relationships are an integral part of what it means to be human. They allow us to create meaningful bonds which help us navigate the world around us. This Social Wellness Month, McGregor highlights the vital role healthy relationships play in our health.

Social Wellness Month began in the early 2000s to raise awareness about the importance of forming quality relationships and community connections. Research suggests social support can benefit one’s well-being in many ways including increased self-esteem, healthier coping skills, reduced stress, feelings of belonging, and improved physical and mental health.

In 2023, the U.S. Surgeon Genral declared loneliness a public health epidemic. According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), 30% of adults report feelings of loneliness at least once a week while 10% report feeling lonely every day. Loneliness affects people across all demographics and can be incredibly dangerous if ignored.

Discovering ways to meet new people and strengthen existing relationships can feel overwhelming; however, there are many opportunities for people to develop social networks. Here are ten ways you can improve your social health:

  1. Attend in-person or virtual events such as sports games, concerts, happy hours, and networking opportunities.
  2. Find others who share a hobby by joining groups dedicated to those interests.
  3. Volunteer for a cause you believe in meeting others with similar passions.
  4. Increase your physical activity by joining a local sports team or trying a new fitness class to meet others while exercising.
  5. Reconnect with old friends and/or distant relatives to revive past relationships.
  6. Practice trust, respect, honesty, and openness in your relationships.
  7. Set aside time in your day to connect with friends and family.
  8. Reach out for help, even when it is hard to ask. Let friends, family, or professionals know if you are struggling.
  9. Share your interests with others. Technology can be a great way to share your interests with the world and build a community around that.
  10. Make time for self-care whether that be meditation, journaling, walking, drawing, or something else that brings you joy and leaves you feeling satisfied.

Staying connected is important and is something that many people struggle with. This Social Wellness Month, McGregor reminds you that you are never alone, and there are many services available to help you thrive.
